About Us
Stepping into Doud’s Market is about more than picking up essentials. As America’s oldest family-operated grocery store, the Mackinac Island mainstay is steeped in history — with pleasant reminders in the form of family pictures on the walls that stretch back to the 19th century when it was founded by James and Patrick Doud.
Now 140 years later, time and necessity have changed the nature of business at the market, formerly known as Doud Bros. and then Doud’s Mercantile. The main shop now resides on historic Main Street, where both tourists and full-time residents mingle while shopping for the everyday and special occasions. The offerings aim to please modern tastes with essential grocery picks complemented by grab ‘n’ go items, specialty local products and a large beer and wine selection.
At the helm of fourth-generation owner Andrew Doud, the shop recently expanded to Doud’s Market & Deli, located near Shepler’s Dock. With quick meal options such as sandwiches, pizza and salads, it is the perfect destination before a lakeside picnic.
While customer interests have driven the market’s evolution, there’s one key principle hasn’t changed: Just as when it was founded in 1884, Doud’s Market aims to serve the community of Mackinac Island with care, quality and convenience.
